The Era of Abundant Mediocrity

Imagine a world where 100,000 new songs flood streaming platforms every day. Oh, wait… that was already our reality in 2023! Music has become so easy to produce that even your shower-singing neighbor could release an album.

But that’s not all! The world of cinema and TV series isn’t far behind. Thanks to technological advancements, we’re flooded with visually stunning content… but narratively stupid.

And now, the software development world seems ready to join this merry cacophony of mediocrity. Gone are the days when names like Adobe, Microsoft, or EA were synonyms of quality. Today, thanks to no-code and low-code tools, anyone can call themselves a “developer” and flood app stores with their creations.

One might think that this democratization of creation is a good thing. After all, who hasn’t dreamed of becoming a recognized artist or developer? But when quantity crushes quality, we find ourselves drowning in an ocean of mediocrity where it becomes increasingly difficult to find true gems.

It’s as if everyone was given a brush and canvas, hoping to create thousands of Picassos. Instead, we end up with an infinite gallery of children’s drawings, all similar and without real originality.

So, what does the future hold? Movies entirely generated by AI? Songs composed by algorithms? Applications created by other applications?

In this new world, real talent is more welcome and important than ever. Their creativity, expertise, and unique vision are essential to elevate the overall quality of content and products. In parallel, we, as consumers, must develop our critical thinking and be sensitized to the importance of supporting quality rather than quantity. It’s up to us to make informed choices, to recognize and value true talent, in order to avoid perpetuating this economy of mediocrity.

In the meantime, maybe I’ll create my own app. How about a generator of sarcastic blog posts?
